The Wisdom of Plants

Inspired by a tribe in Burkina Faso who rank plants highest on the wisdom scale, Sarah's latest project is a deep dive into the natural world around her. Seeing plants not just as flora but as neighbors, extended family, and protectors, she aims to learn from them and understand their profound power.

To do this, Sarah is embarking on a vast project: she's extracting dye from every plant on her croft. She meticulously dyes swatches of wool, cotton, linen, and silk, then modifies half of her swatches with iron.

The heart of the project lies in the charts she creates. Each chart features the dyed swatches, a hand-drawn reference of the plant (often in its own ink), and a record of its historical use by humans for medicinal, ceremonial, and spiritual purposes. These charts serve as both a record of her findings and a springboard for a new series of artworks exploring the human-plant relationship.

While the full project requires external funding, the charts themselves have generated significant interest. You can now purchase scanned and printed versions of these charts, available on 310GSM etching paper from our shop.
